Why North Austin Has a Wildlife Problem — And Why It’s Getting Worse
North Austin is caught between two forces that both push wildlife toward your house. On one side, neighborhoods like Anderson Mill and Milwood were built out in the late 1970s through the 1990s and have had forty-plus years to grow the kind of dense, mature oak and cedar canopy that squirrels, raccoons, and roof rats treat as a highway system — including the tree cover along the Northern Walnut Creek Trail and Balcones District Park. On the other side, the North Burnet/Gateway district and the area around the Domain are in the middle of a genuine construction boom, with old warehouse and industrial lots being cleared for dense mixed-use towers along Burnet Road, Braker Lane, and MoPac. Every lot that gets cleared pushes displaced animals into the closest cover they can find — which is often a nearby attic in Scofield Farms, Gracywoods, or North Park Estates.

The Animals We See Most in North Austin
Roof Rats — the single most common call we get north of the river.
